Over the next few weeks the social network that I will be analysing is an App. called Instagram. This app. Is like a blog in itself, with the use of photos and/or videos uploaded from your daily personal adventures, with a brief caption to give a description of your chosen upload, or even leave it blank and let the picture say it all.
Instagram is a social network in which can be seen as a ‘space’ and can be made into a ‘place’. The ‘space’ of Instagram is great as it allows for a wide connection around the world, being able to view photos from someone’s account in different countries. But with this it creates a feeling of insecurity for some, allowing people you do not know to view your information. Some people prefer to be private making it feel more like a ‘place’ and this is why the app. has created the option to place your account on private. This allowing only close connections with friends and family to access your profile.
The power in relation to ‘space’ on Instagram can be seen in either a technocratic or democratic form. The technocratic form is in relation to the privacy of your account, the internet is an exciting and fun place but can also have threats involving your private life. The feeling everything you do and say is under surveillance giving a form of disempowerment. The democratic form being the popularity of people’s accounts, including movie stars, sports stars etc. These people somewhat have a dominance over the social network of Instagram due to their abundance of followers.
Overall Instagram
is what you, yourself can make of it. From personally preference I tend to use
my profile on private creating a ‘place’, as there is no ‘place’ like home (Tuan) .
